About Distillation for Road Tar

Distillation for Road Tar

It is may be defined as the viscous liquid black in color with adhesive properties obtained by destructive distillation of organic matters such as wood, coal, shale etc in the destructive distillation process the material is subjected to heat alone in the absence of air the first step for the production of tar is the carbonization of coal to produce crude tar in the second stage crude tar is refined by distillation process this involves first collection of benzene toluene and xylene and then the middle and heavy oils containing creosote oils and naphthalene the residual material called pitch is then fluxed back with necessary amounts of tar to give the desired road tar.

Features

  • Gas Heated Model
  • Electrically Heated with Energy Regulator
  • Electrically Heated with Varied Control
  • Tar is a temperature susceptible product resulting in great variation in viscosity with change in temperature
  • it is not soluble in carbon disulphide and carbon tetra chlohide but is soluble only in toluene
  • it has a great content of free carbon and is readily distinguished by its typical odour (smell)
  • Preferred in cement concrete roads as they possess low specific surface area.
  • Higher workability.
  • The particle shape is determined by the percentages of flaky and elongated particles contained in it and by determining its angularity.

FAQs of Distillation for Road Tar:

Q: How does the Distillation Unit for Road Tar operate?

A: The unit utilizes an electric heater to distill bitumen samples placed in a stainless steel chamber. Water-cooled condensation efficiently separates the distilled components. Manual controls allow precise adjustments, and safety features ensure secure operation throughout the process.

Q: What are the primary usage and applications of this distillation equipment?

A: This distillation unit is predominantly used as a bitumen testing instrument in laboratories. It is designed for analyzing road tar by separating its components to assess quality and suitability for construction applications.

Q: When should I use this equipment for bitumen analysis?

A: Use the distillation unit whenever there is a need to evaluate the composition or quality of road tar and similar bituminous materials. Its useful during research, quality control, and compliance procedures in lab settings.

Q: Where can this distillation unit be installed or used?

A: The equipment is intended for benchtop installation in laboratory environments, ideally where ambient temperature ranges from 10C to 40C and relative humidity is up to 80%. Its compact dimensions and manual operation make it suitable for a wide range of lab configurations.

Q: What are the key steps in the bitumen distillation process using this unit?

A: Begin by introducing a 100 ml specimen into the chamber (up to 500 ml capacity). Set up water-cooling, initiate electric heating, and manually control the distillation process. Condensed fractions are collected for analysis, following standard test procedures.

Q: What are the benefits of using this particular distillation unit for road tar testing?

A: This unit offers precise measurement (1% accuracy), robust safety mechanisms, corrosion resistance, and long-term durability. Compliance with IS 217 and ergonomic design ensure reliable results and operator comfort during bitumen analysis.

Q: What routine maintenance is required for optimal performance?

A: Routine maintenance involves cleaning the stainless steel parts after each use, ensuring the water-cooled condenser is clear, and checking that safety features such as the thermal cutoff function correctly. The powder coating aids in resisting corrosion for easier upkeep.
