About Kaplan Turbine Test Rig

Kaplan Turbine Test Rig:

The present set-up comprises a scroll casing housing a runner. Stationary guides vanes, from where water enters the turbine and passes through the runner axially. Hub and airfoil vanes are mounted on the runner. Use of centrifugal pump is done for feeding the water to the turbine. The runner is mounted on one end of a central stainless steel shaft, while its other end is connected to a brake arrangement. Acrylic made transparent hollow cylinder is fitted in between the draft tube and the casing for flow observation. Rope brake arrangement is used for applying load to the turbine, so that the turbine efficiency can be calculated. The set-up is provided with control panel. A draft tube is fitted on the turbines outlet. To complete the set-up, guide mechanism, pressure and vacuum gauges are fitted at the inlet as well as outlet of the turbine for measuring the total supply head on the turbine.
