The Van de Graaff vertical generator comprises a silicone belt that acts as a conveyor for electric charges.
Its movement is ensured by two cylindrical pulleys.
One of them is in the hollow metallic sphere.
The sphere is at the top of an insulating column which contains the belt.
At the base of the device is a crank which actuates the driving pulley.
On this type of generator, the larger the spherical envelope, the higher its potential.
Theoretically, with a perfect surface for the metal sphere, the maximum voltage is of the order of 30 kV for each centimeter of radius.
This theoretical value is not reached in practice because of different parameters: irregular surface, losses, etc.
