  • The Van de Graaff vertical generator comprises a silicone belt that acts as a conveyor for electric charges. 
  • Its movement is ensured by two cylindrical pulleys. 
  • One of them is in the hollow metallic sphere. 
  • The sphere is at the top of an insulating column which contains the belt. 
  • At the base of the device is a crank which actuates the driving pulley. 
  • On this type of generator, the larger the spherical envelope, the higher its potential. 
  • Theoretically, with a perfect surface for the metal sphere, the maximum voltage is of the order of 30 kV for each centimeter of radius. 
  • This theoretical value is not reached in practice because of different parameters: irregular surface, losses, etc.
