About Benkelman Beam Apparatus

Benkelman Beam Apparatus

Benkelman beam is a very simple apparatus and it is commonly used for measuring the surface deflection of a pavement under standard loading conditions. A schematic arrangement of the Benkelman beam (Refer Slide Time: 11:11). It is cut at several places because its full length cannot be shown in sketch. This is the probe point which would be resting on a pavement surface at a point at which we are trying to measure the deflection. As you can see here since it is very long its extended portion is connected here by nuts and bolts so it can be dismantled and then for ease of carrying and other convenience it can be carried in two different parts but when we actually use it for deflection measurement we will connect them together so the full length of the beam is going to be attained.

Technical Specification

  • Main Body: 55 (1397 mm) long, black aluminum finish
  • Probe Beam: Aluminum, 8ft. (2.4 m) long, telescopes into case for storage

Portable, Field-Ready Design

This apparatus is designed for effortless field deployment, thanks to its lightweight (approx. 20 kg) build and easy in-situ mounting. The powder-coated finish and corrosion-resistant materials make it highly durable, enabling reliable operation even in challenging site conditions. Adjustable feet and precise alignment mechanisms ensure accuracy on various surfaces.

Precision Testing as per Standards

Achieve highly accurate, immediate readings with the manual analog dial gauge (resolution 0.01 mm; accuracy 0.01 mm). The apparatus adheres strictly to IS: 15878 and ASTM D4695, ensuring results that conform to both Indian and international requirements for pavement deflection analysis.

Manual Operation, Maximum Control

This manually operated apparatus requires no external power sourcemaking it ideal for use in remote locations. The operator has complete control over the measurement and adjustment process, with an adjustable test stroke up to 400 mm and a single-point measurement setup for effective bitumen pavement evaluation.

FAQs of Benkelman Beam Apparatus:

Q: How is the Benkelman Beam Apparatus used for bitumen pavement testing?

A: The apparatus is placed in-situ on the pavement surface, with its adjustable feet ensuring precise alignment. The pivoted fulcrum and beam design allow measurement of pavement deflection under load using the analog dial gauge. Its manual operation provides immediate, accurate readings for each single-point setup.

Q: What are the benefits of using this apparatus in the field?

A: Thanks to its robust, portable design and corrosion-resistant materials, the apparatus is easy to transport and requires no external power supply. Its high accuracy (0.01 mm) and fast response time enable reliable, on-site pavement evaluations in diverse weather and site conditions.

Q: When should the Benkelman Beam Apparatus be used during road construction or maintenance projects?

A: It should be employed during pavement condition assessments, both before and after rehabilitation works, or as part of routine quality control. The device is particularly valuable for assessing the structural health and load-bearing capacity of bituminous pavements.

Q: Where can this apparatus be deployed for testing?

A: The device is ideal for field use on bituminous roads or pavements, as it is designed for in-situ mounting and single-point measurement per setup. Its portability and lack of power requirements make it suitable for remote or urban roadworks alike.

Q: What is the process for obtaining pavement deflection readings with this device?

A: After setting up the apparatus on the pavement, align the beam and set the dial gauge to zero. Apply the test load to the pavement and manually record the deflection shown by the gauge. The apparatuss standard beam length and adjustable test stroke facilitate straightforward, repeatable measurement.

Q: What kind of maintenance does the Benkelman Beam Apparatus require?

A: Routine maintenance involves cleaning after use, checking for alignment accuracy, and ensuring the dial gauge functions smoothly. As the device is constructed from powder-coated steel and aluminum, occasional surface inspection is recommended to prevent any buildup or corrosion.

Q: What is the measuring range and accuracy of this Benkelman Beam Apparatus?

A: The device measures pavement deflections in the range of 050 mm with a high level of accuracy, specifically 0.01 mm. This precision meets the standards required for comprehensive pavement analysis and control.
